Microinterview: Brin Williams

Brin Williams’s three 100 word micro-fiction stories, “I Don’t Trust You”, “I Trust You”, and “I Don’t Trust Me” will appear in the second issue of The Centifictionist (Vol. 1, Issue 2, Fall/Winter 2020). Brin graciously answered a few brief questions for us. Read the interview below.

1. What inspired the stories “I Don’t Trust You”, “I Trust You”, and “I Don’t Trust Me”?

There are always several characters in my head and in order to do this one justice, I decided to write the same character from three different perspectives.

2. What inspires you and your writing?

I’m a character-driven writer; I’m inspired by stories, fairy tales, television, video games, anime, and anything with interesting and unique characters in it.

3. What keeps you going when experiencing times of misery and despair?

The prospect of being able to write more. I’m pushed to overcome my depression because I want to return to my creative self.

4. What advice do you have for micro-fiction writers?

Adapt. These stories were originally three times longer. Many stories you’ve already written can be distilled and made even more potent. You don’t have to set out to write micro-fiction to write good micro-fiction.

5. Is there anything else that you would like people to know about you and/or your writing?

I’m typically a flash fiction writer with a focus on speculative fiction, so this was a bit outside of my comfort zone, even so, I like to try new forms and styles because I believe it improves your writing overall.
